ADVANCE DIRECTIVES

EXPLORING THE BASICS

WHAT IS AN ADVANCE DIRECTIVE?

WHY ARE ADVANCE DIRECTIVES IMPORTANT?

An Advanced Directive is a legal document that is designed to help an individual communicate their wishes about medical treatment at some time in the future when they are unable to make their wishes known because of illness or injury. In such an event, medical professionals will use this document to determine an individuals preferred method, duration, or even absence of life-saving treatment. These wishes are generally based on personal values.

The decision to make life-ending medical decisions for a loved one can be one of the most difficult experience a person can ever go through. No parent, spouse, or child is ever prepared to make that kind of decision. An Advance Directive can remove the burden from love-ones, give them peace of mind, and inform medical professionals about your preferred scope of treatment.
